The Rose

It was as if I was seeing her for the first time
Not the girl I was used to she was so new to my eyes
In her wedding gown it hit me then that she was someone’s bride
This day how I wish this day would have also be mine
At hand a fake plastic rose she gave me years ago
To symbolize our love that would never die
Mixed emotions was evident in her face that she couldn’t hide
It was hard to tell what she was feeling inside
I was merely three steps from her yet it felt like a couple miles
Handed her the rose not sure if this was goodbye

A memorable day it was the first time I saw her face
A perfect picture I’ve hold since the age of ten
Going home from school just like any other day no good reason to smile
Then I saw this beautiful Angel sitting outside
She seemed so promising like the next day
The girl next door was her title until finally I heard her name
“Jane, come inside and lock the door it’s about to rain”
So Jane was the name and so I said to myself
For weeks we played the eye game
Exchanging glance at each other but no words said
Until her birthday when all that changed
27th March on a Monday it was I was passing by her place
She called by my name
I ignored thinking my imagination are getting wilder by day
She called again
I stood still not knowing which response to give
She came closer an invitation card handed to me
Happy birthday Jane
She smiled a bit and went back in

Our very first date wasn’t sure if I would live to see this day
Seven years later and for sure it was worth the wait
When I asked her if she was willing to be mine
She didn’t say a word but nodded with tears on her eyes
It was a dream I thought only that it was daytime
She became an extension of me
A part of me I didn’t know if I’ll be able to live without
I prayed and hope that the day will never come for us to find out
Happy ever after don’t exist and so that unwanted day definitely reached
I got a scholarship to go and study abroad
I was supposed to be excited but for some reason I wasn’t
A lot can change in five years the same way five years can change a lot
It was not in my place to say no
As I was about to take my place in the flight
A plastic coloured rose she gave me
Until the day this rose dies know that your heart will forever be mine

Five years wasn’t forever and forever wasn’t as long
And finally I was back home
Jane the first one on my mind and her door I went to knock
But she was not alone with her was this guy I thought I’ve seen before
The same guy she’s been posting on her instagram
Even though I wasn’t good in maths
For sure this was a simple sum
A lot can change in five years the same way five years can change a lot
And for that very reason I blamed her not
Awkward moments between us and finally we got used to that
Until the day she told me that for her hand she was asked
And she wanted to know my take on that
How could I tell her that my feelings for her are still the same
And in the five-year period nothing really changed
And for first time the words to say to her I lacked
Jane my blessings you have
Hoping that to her was enough
For what I really wanted to say remained at heart
On her wedding day I went to give my last regards

At hand a fake plastic rose she gave me years ago
To symbolize our love that would never die
Mixed emotions was evident in her face that she couldn’t hide
It was hard to tell what she was feeling inside
I was merely three steps from her yet it felt like a couple miles
Handed her the rose not sure if this was goodbye
